Autumn in Paris

This post is one of many documenting my week in Paris, a present to myself for graduating pastry school in the fall of 2012. Every moment was spent eating and one post wasn’t enough. It’s now a short novel. Kidding. I hope.

It was nice to experience Paris in the fall. On previous trips I’ve always had the luxury of the summer warmth and while this time it was an unfriendly 40 degrees, it didn’t stop me from taking in the city by foot. Most of Paris continues to be green but I was happy to find some autumnal colors here and there.

Walking along the Seine river towards the Louvre

About to cross the pedestrian bridge, Pont des Arts, shown on the left. The trees with yellow-orange tops were beautiful against the Louvre in the late afternoon sunlight. I’ve always thought blue skies were naturally prettiest but Paris’ buildings are much more lovely when the sky is slightly gray.

I was passing by the Luxembourg Gardens around 8am in the morning and this one tree-lined path captured my attention with its soft, golden hue.

The Luxembourg Gardens mid-afternoon more vividly orange and red.

A romantic walk

The Fontaine de Leda inside the gardens

Statue of Pan, a half goat/half man with the Pantheon behind it

Inside the garden of “The Thinker” at the Rodin Museum. Showing above the trees is Les Invalides, a complex of buildings all relating to the military history of France.

I was happily surprised to see so much celebration for Halloween. I didn’t realize it was celebrated. Here is a chocolate pumpkin filled with candies from Pastry Chef Georges Larnicol. Also on display was a cauldron, and mushroom scene.

In the window of chocolatier Patrick Roger, this gigantic pumpkin was accompanied by an ape. I’m not sure how the two are related but both are eye-catching and certainly did the trick of drawing me into the store.

Inside you can buy miniature, 4″ white chocolate versions of the pumpkin.

Even smaller, a glittery marzipan pumpkin with a face.

In the Montmartre area while walking on Rue Lepic, I fell in love with this Halloween spider cake from cupcake shop, Berko. After days of fancy individual pastries, it was a nice bit of home to see a layered cake. On top is a coffin with bones around it. To the right is a skeleton cake if the bright orange is not spooky enough.
