After going through all the effort to taste the cronut I thought I’d try out another bakery’s interpretation of it for comparison. ChikaLicious came up with a Dough’Ssant which has a vanilla pastry cream filling and smears of raspberry and lemon glaze on top.
Verdict? It is more like a croissant sandwich shaped like a doughnut, so I’d call it a Croissanut. Wow that’s not the best mash up but you get the idea, more emphasis on the croissant. It is split in half and spread with a bit of vanilla cream. The exterior is incredibly light and crisp. I finished it in less than a minute.
If you’re looking for pastry like the cronut this isn’t it. As a stand-alone pastry though it is delicious. Chickalicious has two storefronts. Dessert Bar serves a prix fixe dessert menu and Dessert Club is where you can pick up a Dough’Ssant. If you want something a bit more decadent try their other hybrid, the Yum Bun, a cross between a croissant and cinnamon bun.
