Graduation Celebration...the Foodie Way

I love an occasion to go all out with food and festivities. A graduation certainly deserves a celebration and my mind was overflowing with ideas of how to celebrate my sister’s well-earned degree. The school is UC Berkeley so I incorporated the school colors, mustard yellow and navy, into my sweet treats. And for celebration dinner, the place [...]

Pink is the New Red: Grapefruit Cupcakes

Red roses, red hearts, red boxes of candy. Valentine’s Day is a sea of red. I decided to make pink the color to celebrate with and my ingredient of choice… grapefruit.

Restaurant Review: Brunch at Dottie's

Over the holidays I had brunch at Dottie’s True Blue Cafe in San Francisco. It was the day after Christmas which was a gamble considering it is already a huge tourist spot, especially after being featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners Drive-In’s and Dives. There are only about 10 tables so usually a line has formed before the place is [...]

Birch de Noel

I love the concept of a Buche de Noel (or Yule log). The dessert is traditionally served during the holidays in France. It is shaped like a freshly cut log and often decorated with meringue mushrooms, berries, and rosemary sprigs to give it that wintery look. I’ve recently been raving about Francois Payard’s version after [...]

Glazed Pumpkin Cinnamon Buns

After dessert, I love making brunch. I’ve gotten really good at savory items but when there are a lot of people over I jump at the chance for sweet things- pancakes, french toast, crepes. It’s like having dessert in the morning. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas I make a sweet brunch item. It’s a warm up [...]

Fluffiest Pancakes & Pasta

Using ricotta cheese, I created lemon ricotta pancakes for breakfast and ricotta gnocchi. The ricotta is the magic ingredient as it makes both dishes very light and fluffy. Feels less filling. In the case of the pancakes, maybe not such a good idea because I was able to eat a stack of four.

Sur la Table: Chocoholics Only

The minute I got home I went to the fridge and chugged a nice cold glass of skim milk. I keep forgetting we should have some on hand for class when feasting on chocolate. Here is my recap for all you chocolate lovers, or more appropriately, chocoHOLICS, because I’d say there was about a 1/2 [...]

Sweet 4th

For 4th of July this year, I decided to be festive with the desserts. The best part was, berries naturally have the bright, vibrant red and blue hues.

After my unsuccessful first attempt at making ice cream (put the liquid in the maker when it was too hot and never solidified) I picked sorbet. To increase my chances of [...]

My Bottega Experience: save room for dessert

After reading the review from Michael Bauer from the SF Chronicle, I knew I had to try Bottega, Michael Chiarello’s restaurant in Napa Valley. I’ve always been a huge fan of his cooking and though sadly no new episodes are being taped, Easy Entertaining on Food Network is still a favorite. But what really sealed the [...]
